David Taylor, vice-president of marketing at IT management software vendor LANDesk, demonstrated the capability. The product's software scanning really impressed us: It let us grab config, batch or other text files in the software scan, as well as exclude selected directories. Registry keys can be scanned and reported as well. Best of all, creating custom form data (such as asking users for their phone numbers and mailing addresses) was a breeze. We could then be alerted to any changes in inventory, such as a decrease in RAM on any system. Help desk agents typically encounter resistance when they want to view end users' desktops -- and especially when they want to escalate to remote control. End users might not be worried during deskside visits, but the idea of allowing some unseen entity to manipulate their desktops can be disconcerting. Typically, however, the need to return to productivity quickly overcomes the paranoia users have about allowing remote access to their systems. "When we first started doing assisted support, there was this attitude that Big Brother was in charge. And there are still groups of people that are leery about people looking into their machines," says Andy Nosal, supervisor of LANDesk operations at Raymond James Financial Inc. The LANDesk Management Suite, previously owned by Intel, is the only product in this Group Test which is not in fact an anti-virus solution at all. It offers network management and software deployment, which is basically what anti-virus management is all about anyway.

One of the suite’s clear advantages is that it is not tied to any vendor’s anti-virus software - you can install and manage any combination of products you like. The agent can monitor the install process for any software and create a package that will mimic the process on any system, often faster and easier than installing the software natively... Once it is all up and running, the software is surprisingly easy to use.
